A little over, rather. Anyway, here's the skinny:

Employment:
I am a failed tree-planter; it was not the life for me. Worked for all
of June as a catch-all nanny/babysitter/housecleaner/servant for some
RichPeople in a RichNeighbourhood not especially close to home. Spent a
great many hours with Sebastien-the-biter and his sister; days
alternated between beatific and hellish. Am now packing in order to
tomorrow depart for camp, where I will be spending a week in a cabin
with about eight little girls as well as a co-counsellor. I get back on
Saturday the 8th; on Monday the 10th I begin six straight weeks of day
camp. Following day camp, I have a little bit of a break, and the head
back to the first camp to spend a week in the kitchen, and then a long
weekend chillaxing before school starts.

School:
I've picked my major: I'll be doing a double-M in English and History.
I've decided (sort of) that I'll be focussing on Canadian History
within my H. degree; still no thoughts on where I want to specialize
within the English.

Weddings: No,
I'm not engaged. But my cousin Ruth is. Also, my friend Jenna. It's all
quite exciting, and I'm hoping to soon hear similar news from Karen. I
expect that she's hoping, too.

Packing: It's
driving me a little crazy. I'm bringing up to Junior Girls this year
more things than I ever have before, and I'm not quite sure how
everything is going to fit. The good news is that I'm getting a ride
(thanks, H!) and don't have to take the bus up with all the campers.

Health:
It's been recently discovered that I have mild scoliosis. Not enough to
be treatable, mind you, just enough to deny me another precious
half-inch of height (and thus be rather irksome). I also got from my
doctor a prescription for some scary anti-inflammatory pills ("warning:
use of this medication has resulted in fetal and newborn death" and
other similar disaster warnings are included) which help my joints feel
a lot better. They've done some x-rays to try and figure out what
exactly is going on, but the results still won't be back for another
week or so.

Cookies: Phil made me some yesterday. They are delicious.

Dollar Stores: I
know, I know, people in China (or... wherever) are paid tiny amounts of
money to make cheap trinkets and things which we then buy here for tiny
amounts of money... but, I really like them. I've been getting a lot of
things for camp at dollarama and the like. It can be fun... highlights
include crazy straws, ugly teeth, a cabin set of mosquito-net hats
(oh-so-necessary in beautiful Muskoka this time of year), and taking
home 66 wooden boxes on the long, long subway ride.

This: is distracting me now... I need to go pack some more.

Right-o, then.

Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Wait.... why am I still awake?
Back in July.

Don't miss me too much, Xangaland. I'll try to update periodically throughout the summer if I can.

If you want to write (and you do want to write, don't you?): email me at my yahoo address, or hit 'email me' on
the sidebar there if you don't know it, and you should get an
auto-response that'll tell you what to do.

I love snail mail.

Really.
He also has the sort of accent which makes him sound even smarter than that. This rather large tome is sitting in my backpack as we speak, and perhaps after dinner I shall start it in a leisurely fashion. With tea.

Since I haven't really posted since... about twelve years ago... here's what's going on, point-form style:

- I had my first of four exams today -- U of T goes late, what can I say? It went fairly well; I have two more next week, and one the week after. Strangely, though, I've been out of school for nigh-on two weeks, since we're given a study/"study" break before exams.

- I've gotten a summer job with a company called Brinkman. I will be tree-planting. This means, roughly, sleeping in a tent for two months in the middle of the bush, somewhere North of Thunder Bay (which is pretty mad North to begin with); working ten-hour days, four days out of five, planting seedlings; being at the mercy of all sorts of weather; being paid a generous $0.10 for every tree I put in the ground; experiencing the many joys of deerfly/blackfly/mosquito season; and the like. Despite all that, I think it'll be kinda fun, if you'll take "fun" to mean "fun, but only in that insane sort of way." So, I've been buying supplies of various kinds -- including my oversized manly work boots, my bright yellow rain gear, my reflector vest, and my neon orange hard hat -- just call me Captain Safety!

- The Hart House Chorus had our Spring Concert back early in April... we did some things very well, and got through some others, and overall I think it was quite successful. It was also our conductor's 25th year of directing the chorus, so as a surprise we had a piece commissioned for him, which we then sang at the concert with the aid of some alumni, tout en secret. You should have seen John's face. Also on the HHC subject, I find myself duly elected as the Assistant Librarian for next year.

- Going back to that tree-planting thing, I realised today that I will be leaving in less than two weeks, and won't be back until July. It seems shockingly soon, really.

- Kingdom of Loathing. I plan on choosing my courses next year so that I can swing either way if I want to (not like that).

- Mom made muffincakes today. he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said

the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with
swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts

this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be

Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was
seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief
priests and the elders. 4"I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood."
"What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility."

5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money." 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners. 8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then
what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the
thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10and they used them to buy the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."

John 18:28-40

28Then the Jews led Jesus
from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early
morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the
palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?"
30"If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."

31Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law."

"But we have no right to execute anyone," the Jews objected. 32This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.

33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"

34"Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"

35"Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?"

36Jesus
said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would
fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from
another place."

37"You are a king, then!" said Pilate.
      Jesus
answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this
reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to
the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

38"What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. 39But
it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of
the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?"

40They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion.

John 19:1-11,15-16

1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.
4Once
more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out
to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." 5When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"

6As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!"
But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."

7The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."

8When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10"Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"

11Jesus
answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you
from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a
greater sin."

15But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!"
"Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked.
"We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.

16Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

Isaiah 53:8-12

8 By oppression nd judgment he was taken away.
And who can speak of his descendants?
       For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11 After the suffering of his soul,
       he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Luke 23:26-43

26As they led him away,
they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country,
and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For
the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the barren women,
the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' 30Then
" 'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!"
and to the hills, "Cover us!" '[31For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33When
they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him,
along with the criminalsne on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

35The
people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said,
"He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the
Chosen One."

36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."

38There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

43Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

Matthew 27:45-54

45From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. 46About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"hich means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah."

48Immediately
one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put
it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him."

50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

54When
the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the
earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and
exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"

Mark 15:42-47

42It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43Joseph
of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself
waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for
Jesus' body. 44Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46So
Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the
linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone
against the entrance of the tomb. 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus saw where he was laid.

Matthew 27:62-66

62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63"Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.' 64So
give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day.
Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the
people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will
be worse than the first."
65"Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how." 66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
